Scented candles add ambiance to a home, but they are not completely risk-free for dogs and cats. Pets may knock over lit candles, causing burn injuries or starting a fire. Ingested wax can irritate the mouth and stomach, and the fragrance oils or essential oils used to scent candles may trigger respiratory irritation, especially in cats and brachycephalic dog breeds.
Exposure usually happens when a curious pet licks melted wax, chews on a discarded candle, or breathes in concentrated fragrance in a poorly ventilated room. Hot wax can cause burns to the mouth, paws, or skin. Most small ingestions result in only mild stomach upset, but larger pieces or those containing essential oils can cause more significant problems.
To reduce risk, keep candles out of reach on stable surfaces, never leave them burning unattended, and make sure the room is well ventilated. Consider using flameless LED candles or unscented alternatives in homes with pets, and place pets in another room when burning strongly scented products.
