Japanese dog and cat food found to contain toxic PFAS: research

A new study reported by Mainichi Shimbun has found toxic PFAS in a wide range of dog and cat food sold in Japan. Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, known as 'forever chemicals,' are synthetic compounds that resist breakdown and can accumulate in animals over time. Because dogs and cats eat the same commercial foods daily, even low-level contamination can lead to cumulative exposure. PFAS have been linked to immune suppression, thyroid disease, liver and kidney damage, and certain cancers in humans and animals. The findings raise concerns about how these chemicals enter pet food through water, ingredients, or packaging. Pet owners should note that affected products are not limited to a single brand; contamination appears widespread across the market. The report underscores the need for stricter monitoring, clearer labeling, and safer sourcing for pet food.
